A Reel for the Generations: The Durability and Legacy of Shilton Fly Reels
Shilton saltwater fly reels are gaining a lot popularity here in the United States. Designed and built with an open cork drag system, corrosion- resistant components, and aluminum frames, they can handle abuse.Owned and operated in South Africa since 1997, they have been able to test their reels on some of the toughest fighting fish in the world. This allowed Shilton to earn an impressive reputation for durability and reliability. These are the perfect reel for any guide who’s hard on gear or angler who wants a reel to pass down through generations.
Testing the Shilton: A Fly Reel Perfect For The Charleston Waters
Throughout my fly fishing career, I’ve known the Shilton Fly Reel name but hadn't had the opportunity to fish one until recently. Over the past few weeks, I have put the Shilton SL5 (now renamed SL8) to the test around Charleston's marshes. Paired with a TFO Clouser 7wt rod and lined with Scientific Anglers Magnitude Bonefish Plus (try this line if you haven't- it kicks ass), this reel has quickly earned my respect. I left it in my boat for a true trial by fire, exposing it to the elements and daily use. It definately proved its toughness. The drag is very impressive, just a couple of turns can stop a 30” redfish dead in its tracks. The large spool holds enough backing for inshore species while being small and weighing 7.6 ounces.
Reliability In All Conditions: A Reel That Wont Fail
One topic that should be mentioned is how the SL5 performs under different conditions. Whether wet or dry, clean or caked in salt, the drag remains smooth and consistent, and I love the clicker sound. I’ve had redfish strip drag and test the reel without noticing any performance issues. Reliability is crucial in a fly reel, fish dont give many second chances, especially the ones you really want. As we move into warmer weather here in Charleston, I’m excited to put Shilton Fly Reels to work on larger species like sharks, cobia, and albies!
